The title of our research project is Assessing the Network Structures of CSEM Offenders Online.
I was incredibly interested in this research as I wanted to broaden my understanding and experience within the field of Criminal Justice -- specifically learning how criminal organizations work together and organize themselves. As a psychology and sociology major, I feel that it is vital also to educate myself in other disciplines so that in the future, I am able to utilize my different experiences and academic learnings to differentiate myself as a psychologist.
The PURI funds will allow me to participate in this research while supporting myself as a college student. As a first-generation and low-income student, funds like the PURI allow me to pay for any expenses necessary during my time in college. Further, these funds allow me to focus on my academics and research experience rather than juggling multiple jobs on top of my academic course load.
My biggest piece of advice when it comes to undergraduate research is to get involved and talk to professors whose work you are interested in. Making connections and talking to professors are the first steps to getting involved in research -- especially the research students are particularly interested in. It is also okay not to know where to start, as beginning research can be daunting. Just know that you are not alone if you feel overwhelmed starting research and professors are here to help support you!
